Photography takes an instant out
of time, altering life by holding it still.

This week my friend Adeline included me in her Photographic Diaries project. She has an amazing and seemingly effortless way of organizing some truly unique and cool projects (ie: Ada the Globe Trotting Doll and The Talking Trees). The photographic diaries required only 4 things... An answer to the hard question of why do you photograph? A self portrait, a photo which expresses a love and lastly a photo of details in your life. Easy to the normal person, but not so much to the slightly obsessive compulsive like me! Be sure to stop by Adeline's Lady Croissant Blog *HERE* to see my submission. And thank you again gorgeous Adeline for letting me be a part of it! Also, there's a tie-in here with all the photobooth pic's you see on this post. So you should go for a look-see if only to find out what it is...

Martes Trece

Tuesday, July 13, 2010

In most Spanish speaking countries, instead of Friday, Tuesday the 13th is considered a bad luck day. Searching for reasons you'll get a little on the Fall of Constantinople and the Tower of Babel (both on a Tuesday?). There's also something about the word Martes (Tuesday in Spanish) originating from Mars the God of the war. Day governed by the red planet. Sort of creepy, but glad to have gotten through the day without any mishaps. So superstitious.

Cléo de 5 à 7 (1962), warned not to wear anything new on a Tuesday...

Holiday Favorites,
Apologies and Blizzards

Tuesday, December 22, 2009

Often, when I act badly my general tactic is to act like nothing's happened. It's so bad isn't it? Not to offend any of the guys out there, but that's sort of a guy thing isn't it? It sometimes works, but not always. If the degree of my badness is big enough for me to not be able to hide from it I'm forced (out of shame) to apologize. Which is what I'm doing here today. I'm sorry. I've been a HUGE flake. And though I can offer an array of excuses the truth boils down to me being bad at managing my time and unable to properly think when under stress. Stress isn't my friend. But things have gotten considerably better this week. I'm officially on vacation for the next two weeks and almost done with my Christmas shopping... just three things left on the list, very last minute but sadly this is good for me. Does anyone know of a patron saint for flakes?

Also, this last week I had the extreme honor of guest posting for my dear friend Diana of our.city.lights. The topic was one of my favorite films for the Holiday's... visit today!

Loud Girl and sleepy boy

Monday, November 2, 2009

Life would be perfect if I could write like this…

Sleepy Boy liked small spaces to take naps in but everywhere he went Loud Girl followed. She’d drop dishes and slam doors. Pop balloons and knock trashcans over. She wasn’t mean, just happy to make noise. Sleepy Boy tried nesting in trees and being buried underground but nothing worked. Loud Girl hung around making a ruckus. Then one day Sleepy Boy dove into the ocean with Loud Girl trailing. They sunk to the very bottom where it was dark and quiet. Very quiet. Everything seemed well and Sleepy Boy looked forward to a good night’s rest but then Loud Girl made friends with the whales and spurred them to sing. Whale songs came in from all directions, from miles away. Sleepy Boy had no reason to fight with Loud Girl because he knew she loved making noise as much as he loved sleeping. So he decided to crawl into one of the whale’s mouth and find rest deep inside the center of its belly. From then on Loud Girl and Sleepy Boy traveled the oceans with a pod of singing whales while he slept and she screamed as loud as she could.

Around the World in 1,000 Pictures

A Photographic Encyclopedia
to Travel to Foreign Lands.
Edited by A. Milton Runyon and Vilma F. Bergane;

Around the World in 1,000 Pictures

This favorite book of mine was given to me by a dear friend about two years ago for a birthday, ‘It looked like something you’d like?’ (Which I did!). My thoughtful and intelligent friend has a keen eye for gift giving don’t you think? So come on, let’s go visit the world in 1954 through pictures and cute captions... not all 1,000 though.

Trinidad and the Virgin Islands

Trinidad: ‘On drive over the saddle to Maracas Bay you pause here. Most colorful and polyglot of all the West Indies islands, Trinidad is home of the Calypso, the satirical and haunting folk songs. As you walk though the streets of the capital, Port of Spain, you’re likely to encounter East Indians, Hindus, British, Spanish, French, Chinese, Africans, Americans. There are Moslem mosques, Hindu Temples, bazaars. Port of Spain is 9 hours flying time from New York.’

Around the World in 1,000 Pictures - Hawaii

Hawaii: ‘You won’t be able to match the skill of these surfboard riders at first try, but the simpler styles are not hard to learn. First successful ride is a great thrill.’

Around the World in 1,000 Pictures - Cuba

Cuba: ‘Paseo de Marti (formerly ‘The Prado’) runs from the center of Havana to the sea wall. Treelined, it reminds you of the Champs-Élysées, with its sidewalk cafés.’

Around the World in 1,000 Pictures - France

France: ‘Biarritz, on Bay of Biscay, is one of France’s most fashionable resorts. It’s 7-mile beach, mild climate attracted Napolean III, Empress Eugenie, other royalty.’

Visit *here* to see more 'foreign lands', like Mexico and Australia and Switzerland! :)

I want to be a Cowgirl

The Rifle Queen

Annie Oakley, born 1860, incredible marksman and female superstar
in a male dominated profession.

Annie demonstrates her skills in a film made in Thomas Edison’s Black Maria Studio (1894):

Cowigirl love songs to set the mood...

Loretta Lynn ‘Everybody’s somebody fool’ (I love the way she sings the word baby)

Shirley Webb ‘Teardrops in my heart’ (because even cowgirls get the blues)

Patsy Cline ‘Walkin' After Midnight’

Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters ‘Sweet Talkin’ Man’

Queen of the wild Frontier

Calamity Jane, born 1852, a woman who managed to make herself accepted and respected in a world of frontiersmen in a time when women rarely were able to get out of the restrictions of what was considered to be a woman's role.

Scene from the 1953 film ‘Calamity Jane’, starring Doris Day:

Mexican Cowgirls (Vaqueras)

The Bandit Queen

Belle Starr, born 1848, known associate of Jesse James, stage coach robber and horse thief… gunned down while walking home one evening. Would ride around dressed in black velvet and a plumed hat, riding side-saddle and carrying two pistols with a cartridge
belt across her hips.

From the film ‘Belle Starr’ (1941), starring Gene Tierney as the outlaw:
