Devils on Horseback
and songs about being good
Thursday, November 12, 2009
The title of the video is 'Dinner at Five Leaves in Greenpoint Brooklyn shot with super 8 film' and is directed by Art of JustLikeaCat. Short is from a crime film the director is working on entitled Too Hot to Kill and the song playing is 'If I'm good' by Alexander 'Skip' Spence. The entire thing only lasts 53 seconds and I swear, I just can’t stop watching it.
Did you see what they're eating? Apparently it’s something called Devils on Horseback. Dates wrapped in bacon, considered a 'starter' and served with dijon mustard. Are you familiar? If I lived anywhere near Brooklyn I would so go and try them now, but since I don't the next best thing has to be this recipe shared by Martha…
THINGS YOU’LL NEED
24 large dates, pitted
12 slices bacon, halved crosswise
1/3 cup crumbled Stilton cheese
DIRECTIONS
(1) Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place 24 toothpicks in a small bowl filled with water; let soak 15 minutes. (2) Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and fit with a wire rack; set aside. (3) Halve dates lengthwise being careful not to cut all the way through. And place a small amount of cheese in the center of each date. (4) Wrap a piece of bacon around each date. Secure bacon with a toothpick. (5) Place dates on prepared baking sheet. Bake until bacon is cooked through, 20 to 25 minutes.
Wishes for a great Friday mis amores♥

MMMM amazing.
Oh yes! My Dad is always talking about devils on horseback being a huge thing in the 70s for swish dinner parties - apparently he became a little ill once after an encounter with a bad one once...I've never had any myself though - I'd love to have a summer dinner partys and invite you and George over for cocktails and Devils! What do you think Gabbi?
It looks like a lovely warm day there in NYC - love it and the music - I love a good bass guitare riff! Have a lovely weekend sweetie! XOXOX

I love dates but as a vegetarian, I'll pass on the bacon. In France they serve them with an almond-paste stuffing...
I LOVED that film! I'm a big fan of the super 8 film format and use it myself to make little films. Mine are not very good but I have fun with them. I just wish it wasn't so expensive to process... :(
Thanks for the recipe Gabbi! I like dates and I like bacon so this one sounds like a winner!
