On the Subject of Costumes

Thursday, September 17, 2009

I’m such a fan of a good Halloween costume, and generally the more macabre the better. The following tribute to Tippi Hedren’s performance in the Hitchcock classic The Birds is one of my favorites. It’s rather popular but I’m still crazy about the idea and seems easy to imitate:

•••• WHAT YOU’LL NEED ••••
A simple grey or light green women's business suit,
a blonde wig, craft birds, fake blood, a sewing kit and scissors.

•••• HOW TO ••••
Step 1, begin by putting on the suit, take out your birds and position them on the suit to see where they might look the best. Usually one on the shoulder, one on a sleeve and one on the back works the best. Step 2, once you know where you want the birds, you can start attaching them to the jacket. The craft birds should come with wires that stick out of the base of the bird. Stick those wires through the jacket and then spread them apart. Sew the wire to the jacket with your sewing kit. Step 3, once the birds are attached, you can start adding some details. With your scissors, cut some rips in the fabric to make it look like the birds attacked. Put some fake blood on the cuts and on the birds' beaks. Step 4, the final touch is to put your hair, or wig, into a french twist. Then place your final bird in your hair. Secure with bobby pins if needed. Put a drop of fake blood on the bird's beak and then put a drip of blood on your forehead dripping down your face. Make-up looks best in a 60's style of red lips and smoky eyes.

When you mentioned birds, I remember the birdlady in Central park in the movie Home Alone (New York).

Marvellous!! I was first introduced to the American Halloween fancy dress tradition by two American gals I work with (they came to work as Pipi longstocking and a pirate) - I had no idea you could dress up as anything - thought it was just ghosts and witches etc...I think these are the best fancy dress costumes I've seen hands down Gabbi!! Have a lovely Friday sweetie! :) P.S. Fingers crossed your computer recovers soon!!

Hey, Gabbi. This idea of using Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds is awesome. How cool would it be to decorate your house up in this more non-traditional style. Great concept. :)

I love that idea! I'm tired of showing up in the same Hermione Granger or Bunny costume that everyone else is wearing.
Love your blog, I'm following.

I love this! What a brilliant idea. THe birds is a great film. I watched it again recently and loved the clothes, the colours, everything. I had forgotten the really gruesome bits and they were all the more shocking for it. I love that image of the birds gathering on the climbing frame. I might get my stuffed birds out and have a go at this costume!
